LEDs do not produce plant-killing heat, but they get very hot just the same, and heat is the number one killer of LEDs. Great thermal design is the backbone of a long-lasting LED product, and in our 14 years’ professional experience designing LED lighting products, the downfall of just about every other LED grow light on the market. LEDs must be mounted in a very specific way with materials that serve to draw heat away from the LED’s base, also known as the “slug”. This slug must attach to a highly heat-conductive Metal Clad Printed Circuit Board (MCPCB), using very high quality thermal epoxy. Once the heat is passed to the MCPCB, it must be passed to the heat sink (using even more thermal epoxy), where it is dissipated, using either fans or normal convective air. Thicker, more effective materials cost more money. We routinely see thinner MCPCBs with lower thermal effectiveness, weaker thermal epoxies and heat sinks in our competitor’s products. Sure, this lowers your initial outlay, but shortens the light’s lifespan considerably, so in the end, it ends up costing you more money. It is simply a case of “you get what you pay for”.
We often see our competitor’s design “+10%”. This means that for power and thermal management issues, components are chosen that provide a 10% margin beyond basic requirements. This affects power supplies, LEDs, MCPCB size and thicknesses, thermal epoxies or greases, heat sink configuration and number of fans, if fans are used.
We consistently over-engineer our designs to insure our products meet and exceed our claims of longevity, effectiveness and safety. We adjust our power supply outputs to drive our LEDs just a hair under maximum, reducing heat and extending lifespan. We strive to provide 30%+ more capability than our products need during normal operation, insuring our product’s operation far exceeds our customer’s expectations. We claim our products will last 60,000 hours. At the end of this period, our lights will still operate at 60% of the initial light output. To put it in perspective, our products will still be serving you in about 12 years, assuming you run them 24/7 without shutting them off!
